Zentangle Creations

Zen what?  Exactly!  I wondered the same thing.  In a word, it’s a doodle. A structured, contained doodle.

I just heard the term “Zentangle” for the first time a week ago.  I immediately was interested in finding out more, so looked it up online.  I joined a swap (more about this swap place in another post).  What better way to try this Zentangle thing out than to join a swap and be forced to create not one, but two for my swap partner.  Thankfully everyone involved in this swap are new to Zentangles, so I’m guessing no one is going to judge me too harshly.

I have to say that I had so much fun creating my Zentangle pieces.  It was quite relaxing and to now sit back and look at my mini pieces of art, I feel very proud of my creations.  I will state that one of my pieces has a “C” in it because my swap partners name is Celine.

Here are my two creations.  My very first Zentangles…

  2. These are super cool! I can imagine taking this and turning it into a painting! I would love to do that and hang them for display! I’m checking out your links right now!

  3. Susan, I could totally see you doing this. I love doodling and this just takes it to the next level. Somewhat mindless and let’s your mind go free to create as it wishes. No rules. :)

  5. Thanks Kerri! I will admit, I did look at a TON of examples online to get ideas for designs to doodle (so if that’s considered creative, then…). LOL! :)

  6. the first link didn’t go anywhere. according to the second link, this is one of the exercises we did in college at UNCG for an art class. mine had color, though, because I had colored ballpoint pens. I’ve seen a piece of art called “The Death of a Pen,” wherein the artist did a single pattern (teeny tiny curlies all mushed together) that varied in density and so created great depth. He kept going until the pen died as he neared the lower right-hand corner. Thus the name.

  7. Funny that you did this is college. Is there a link to the piece you mentioned “The Death of a Pen”? I’d love to see that. I just checked both of the links I mentioned and both worked for me. The first one is just http://www.zentangle.com. :)

  8. ah, that’s the site I ended up finding on Google! yes, it was a one-day exercise in non-representative drafting. “Death of a Pen” was a student work that I’m pretty sure wasn’t posted online when it was made and displayed. Those were the pre-smart phone, pre-Twitter days, you know. That guy did a bunch of huge pen scribbles, the size you could step into. Some of them looked like holes burrowed in the wall behind. Anyone has the “talent” do that, it just takes time, patience and consistency.
